Dialogue studies the priesthood ban
March 7, 2012
A compendium of essential Dialogue articles related to the priesthood ban:
Spring 1973: Mormonism’s Negro Doctrine: An Historical Overview by Lester Bush, Jr.: Though it may not be admitted as such, this now famous article did more for the changing of the priesthood ban than any other before it.
Spring 1973: Lester Bush’s Historical Overview: Other Perspectives by Gordon C. Thomasson: In the same issue as the above, Thomasson asks some pointed questions of Lester Bush’s research and findings.
Spring 1973: The Mormon Cross by Eugene England. Also in this issue England wrote “We Mormons have our own special cross—one which must weigh heavily on our hearts if we are truly trying to live our religion as Paul recommends: proving all things, holding fast that which is good. When God asks us, as we believe He does, not to give blacks of African descent the priesthood at this time, He asks us to sacrifice not only our political and social ideals and the understanding and good will of our colleagues and friends, but seems to ask us to sacrifice the very essence of His own teachings—the divine potential of all His children, the higher ethical vision of possible exaltation for all people, concepts that are among the most attractive and vital features of our faith.”
Then the following are listed in chronological order:
Before the ban was lifted in June 1978:
