The Tanner Humanities Center at the University of Utah is proud to present a unique symposium on April 11-12, 2014, titled “Faith and Reason, Conscience and Conflict: The Paths of Lowell Bennion, Sterling McMurrin, and Obert Tanner.” All events are free and open to the public. Complete information and symposium schedule available at www.thc.utah.edu. This symposium marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Obert C. and Grace A. Tanner Humanities Center.
To keynote this event, Professor Kathleen Flake (Richard L. Bushman Chair of Mormon Studies, University of Virginia) will deliver the 23rd annual Sterling McMurrin Lecture on Religion and Culture on Friday, April 11 at 7:00 PM in the Salt Lake City Main Library’s auditorium, 210 East 400 South. In her lecture, titled “The LDS Intellectual Tradition: A Study on Three Lives,” Flake will consider the intellectual lives of Bennion, McMurrin, and Tanner in relation to the religious culture from which they came.
Panel discussions will be held on Saturday, April 12 starting at 9 AM at the Tanner Humanities Center, 215 S. Central Campus Dr., Room 143. Symposium panels will not only examine the specific, contemporary impacts of Bennion, McMurrin, and Tanner, but also consider their enduring legacies on issues facing the Mormon Church today.
