Dialogue: A Home for Scholarship on Heavenly Mother

April 4, 2022

Dialogue has long been a home for important scholarship on Heavenly Mother. In the next few weeks, we are publishing a special issue, “Heavenly Mother in Critical Context.” Sign up for our newsletter to be notified when that special issue is published online.
In the meantime, here are a few classic articles worth checking out:
In Fall 1988, Melodie Moench Charles offered an early critical appraisal of Heavenly Mother as imagined by many Mormon feminists in “The Need for a New Mormon Heaven.”
In Summer 1994, Janice Allred published her foundational piece on Heavenly Mother, “Toward a Mormon Theology of God the Mother.”
In Winter 2008, Kevin Barney wrote his classic, “How to Worship Our Mother in Heaven (Without Getting Excommunicated).”
Check out Cheryl Bruno’s letter to the editor responding to Barney’s article and Barney’s response.
We recognize and acknowledge that theology is difficult, messy, and personal.
We hope that by entering into dialogue with each other, we will all create a better community and a better theology that reflects God, ourselves, and our collective futures.
For those currently struggling, know that we at Dialogue will struggle with you.
For those of you mourning, we will mourn with you.
