SCOTT C. RICHARDS {[email protected]} is a retired ophthalmologist, retinal surgeon, and medical acupuncturist, having practiced in Ogden, Utah, and Fort Wayne, Indiana. He loves reading and writing and has published twenty-five journal articles, but this is his first publication outside of the medical field. He and his wife, Tina, live in Ogden, where he enjoys hiking, throwing pottery, genealogical research, and spending time with his three children and seven grandchildren.

The atonement of Jesus Christ is accepted in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) as the central tenet of the gospel and the most important event in human history. However, the Church has not endorsed or adopted any specific atonement model as official doctrine. Instead, perhaps recognizing the value of diverse imagery, Church leaders accept and use concepts from many different models and generally discuss Christ’s atonement more in terms of metaphor than theory.
