R. JOHN WILLIAMS is a Ph.D. candidate in comparative literature at the University of California, Irvine. He also has articles forthcoming in Comparative Critical Studies and Postmodern Culture. His dissertation deals with the conver￾gence of Cold War American Orientalism, Asian American literature, and the politics of multilingualism.
