IAN G. BARBER holds a Ph.D. in archaeology and anthropology from the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, where he has taught an￾thropology. He is currently completing a book on culture conflict in early New Zealand funded by the Historical Branch of the Department of In￾ternal Affairs. He is of New Zealand Pakeha descent.
