CARROL FIRMAGE {[email protected]} teaches English at ITT Technical College in Salt Lake City. She recently (2009) received her master’s degree in environmental humanities at the University of Utah. This article, an excerpt from her thesis, is part of a larger study on the history of agriculture in Utah that she is pursuing in conjunction with her husband, Edwin Firmage Jr.

Apples! Bags and boxes of apples! So many of them lined the perimeter of our garage that the car hardly fit. It was mid-October, and I stood there counting the apples picked from our three backyard trees and asked myself how long it would take to deal with all of them.
